2001 में एमडीएमएस एक पका हुआ मध्याह्न भोजन योजना बन गई, जिसके तहत प्रत्येक सरकारी और सरकारी सहायता प्राप्त प्राथमिक विद्यालय के प्रत्येक बच्चे को प्रतिदिन न्यूनतम 300 कैलोरी ऊर्जा और 8-12 ग्राम प्रोटीन के साथ तैयार मध्याह्न भोजन परोसा जाना था। न्यूनतम 200 दिन. इस योजना को 2002 में आगे बढ़ाया गया था ताकि न केवल सरकारी, सरकारी सहायता प्राप्त और स्थानीय निकाय स्कूलों में पढ़ने वाले बच्चों को शामिल किया जा सके, बल्कि शिक्षा गारंटी योजना (ईजीएस) और वैकल्पिक और अभिनव शिक्षा (एआईई) केंद्रों में पढ़ने वाले बच्चों को भी शामिल किया जा सके।
